Becoming a Treatment Foster Parent    

Step 1:           Complete the Online Inquiry Form

Answer your questions and give you more information you may need to help you decision.

Step 2:   Schedule an Orientation.

This is an informational meeting between you and the agency, at your place or ours. There is no obligation, just information.

Step 3:  Licensing Process.

Your Coordinator will assist you with the paperwork, background checks and other items needed during this process. There is a lot to be done, but the agency will guide you through this process.

o       Application – there is no fee to apply for licensure.

o       Upon receipt of application the agency will conduct criminal background checks, check personal references, gather medical clearances, and request A health department inspection of private well and sewer system.

o       The Foster Home Coordinator will assess every member of the family’s strengths and weakness, understanding of the needs of children, and willingness to accept foster children.

o       The Foster Home Coordinator will assess the home for adequacy of space and general safety.

o       The agency writes a home study which contains recommendations regarding issuance of a license.

  STEP 4: TRAINING

o       The agency will assure that new foster parents receive PRIDE training, a comprehensive, standardized pre-service training, and mandatory for all foster parents, in every agency, in the State of Michigan.

o       The agency will provide 12 hours of pre-service training to prepare you for your role as a treatment foster parent.

The agency will allow you access to on-going training throughout your license, invite you to seminars offered by CMH, provide you access to our on-line training program and offer child-specific training that empowers you to work with the individual child placed in your care.
